Introduction to Environmental Noise Measurement and Legislation

For those EHPs who have had little experience of dealing with noise, Liverpool University’s Acoustics Research Unit (ARU) two day ‘Introduction to Environmental Noise Measurement and Legislation’ course offers a great way of learning.

Acoustics Research Unit Lab School

This new and innovative two day course, which will run on 11th -12th October 2011, has been designed to give an understanding of environmental noise measurement methodology and terminology as well as an insight into noise legislation and standards. The course will be of great benefit to enforcement officers, planning officers and consultants whose duties require an understanding of environmental noise issues.

Acoustic demonstrations are used throughout to allow participants to hear for themselves the concepts that are being explained and to illustrate real life scenarios encountered when dealing with noise. This allows the course to have minimal maths content - ideal if the maths content of traditional environmental noise courses causes concern. The course content will focus on:

  • Concepts of sound and noise control
  • Practical aspects of noise legislation, regulations and codes of practice
  • Prevention of noise problems

Dr Gary Seiffert, Short Course Organiser for the ARU comments “By making full use of the University’s purpose built and well-equipped acoustics laboratory we have been able to design a practically based noise course that caters specifically for the needs of EHPs”.

The course has been designed in consultation with David Poley, who has had more than 35 years experience as an Environmental Health Officer specialising in environmental noise.

The course costs £480 (including VAT). A further 10% discount is available to CIEH members. Lunch for the 2 days and a comprehensive delegate pack are included in the cost. CPD points are awarded for candidates attending the course.

The nature of the course and close supervision offered means that the course is limited to a maximum of 14 persons and so early booking is recommended.
