Head of the Liverpool School of Architecture from 1904 to 1933, Charles Reilly (1874-1948) was a key figure in British architecture in the first half of the 20th century. He raised the Liverpool School to international prominence, cultivating links with the United States and promoting American-influenced classicism, before ultimately embracing international modernism. Among his students were leading modernists of the next generation, such as William Holford and Maxwell Fry. This talk will examine Reilly’s teaching methods and his legacy, including his impact on the architecture of Liverpool.
