QUASAR Group welcomes new PhD student
We would like to welcome Montague King, who joined the QUASAR Group in March 2023 as a PhD student within a programme shared between the University of Liverpool/Cockcroft Institute and CERN, where he will be based. His project focusses on the further development of longitudinal beam loss monitors, especially with regards to the conditions at current and future particle accelerators at CERN.
Monty graduated from the University of Freiburg (Germany) with a bachelor’s degree in physics in October 2020. During his bachelor’s project he examined the signal response in dependence of the position of the used laser source for ATLAS silicon strip detectors. Here, the focus lay on the bond-pad region as well as the impact of different p-stop layouts.
Following, he continued with a master’s degree in Physics, staying at the University of Freiburg, which he completed in December 2022. For his master’s project he investigated the characteristics of multiple types of novel silicon sensors, pre- and post-irradiation, with a focus on time resolution. Over the course of this project, Monty implemented various improvements to the experimental setups as well as the corresponding data analysis scripts. Furthermore, Monty worked as a research assistant during his master’s degree to help with the upcoming HL-LHC ATLAS upgrade. This work covered various areas, ranging from GUI-programming to training technicians at a multitude of setups.
