Information for employers

Our programmes will help your employees to bring ideas and up-to-date knowledge and skills back into the workplace.

Apprentices will undertake academically rigorous, part-time study that is built around your business.

Delivered under a blended learning model, apprentice students will benefit from a minimum of 20% of their working time being spent in off-the-job learning, whether on campus in lectures, seminars and practical workshops, or accessed online through remote learning.

We will work with local, regional and national businesses to understand your strategic priorities and challenges. Our programmes will be built to offer real value which can be tailored to a sector, or even developed bespoke to your own business.

Improve the knowledge and skills of your workforce through degree apprenticeships. You can work with us to shape a course for your employees to address your organisation's needs.

Your apprentice will learn in a research environment and be taught by academics who are specialists in their fields. Our research strengths and teaching excellence are ranked among the best in the UK.

A Degree Apprenticeship is an alternative pathway into work-based learning. Under the scheme, apprentices, gain a degree alongside practical skills developed in the workplace.

Levy paying employers

From 1st May 2017, the way the government funded apprenticeships changed.

If you're an employer with a pay bill of over £3 million per year, you are required to pay the apprenticeship levy.

The apprenticeship levy is charged at a rate of 0.5% of your annual pay bill. Levy funds will receive a monthly 10% government top up and can only be used to cover the cost of your apprenticeship training.

The levy allowance operates on a monthly bases and will accumulate throughout the year. Any unused allowance will be carried from one month to the next and will not expire for 24 months.

To access apprenticeship levy funds, employers will need to register with the Apprentice Service How to register and use the apprenticeship service as an employer - GOV.UK

Apprenticeship Funding for Non-Levy employers

If your pay bill is less than £3 million a year the government will contribute up to 100% of the training costs for apprentices.

If you employ 50 or more employees, the government will pay 95% of the training costs for apprentices.

If you have 49 or fewer employees and your pay bill is less than £3 million per year, the government will pay:

100% of the training costs for 16-18 year old apprentices
100% of the training costs for 19-24 year-old apprentices who are Care Leavers or have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
95% of the training costs for all other apprentices
