The University of Liverpool and the Big 5 negotiations

Find out here what the negotiations are and how they impact scholarly publishing.

The Big 5 negotiations and Jisc

The University of Liverpool collaborates with Jisc to negotiate our agreements with the following publishers - Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Sage (the Big 5).

You may also see this called “Next Generation Open Access”.

These negotiations are vital to the sustainability of academic publishing by the UK higher education and research sector.

What has happened so far

Four out of the five publisher offers - Taylor & Francis, Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley - have met the sector-agreed thresholds for acceptance.

Sage’s offer is currently being consulted upon as they missed the October consultation deadline. We expect to have a decision from Jisc by 19 December.

Negotiating with all five publishers concurrently has created competitive pressure, resulting in stronger offers than those achieved by other consortia globally. This demonstrates the power of a unified sector approach under the Next Generation Open Access programme.

Why this is important to the University of Liverpool

The quality ground-breaking research which is conducted at our institution deserves to be published in an openly accessible way that preserves authors' rights at sustainable costs.

To meet our strategic ambitions for 2031, our research must be available on a global scale and impactful to the research community.

Knowledge exchange and partnerships are achieved through open access, and open access enables us to promote the talented researchers we have at the University of Liverpool. This is why negotiating to minimise the barriers and costs, which are implemented by these publishers, is vital to our plans, and the future of research.
