PhD studentship (Graduate Teaching Assistant) in Particle Physics Phenomenology

The Theoretical Physics Cluster within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Liverpool seeks applications for a post-graduate studentship leading to a PhD, starting 1 September 2013 (or soon thereafter).

The award is primarily available to students resident in the UK/EU and will pay full tuition fees and a maintenance grant for 3.5 years. The maintenance grant will be at least 13,726 GBP for 2013/14 with rises anticipated in future years. The studentship includes a commitment of up to 6 hours teaching per week during teaching semesters.

The successful candidate will be expected to work with Dr Martin Gorbahn on "Precision Observables in the Standard Model and Beyond". Possible topics are:

i) Improving the standard model prediction of flavour and Higgs observables to increase their sensitivity to physics beyond the standard model, with a strong emphasis on perturbative calculations.

ii) Determining the parameter space of physics beyond the standard model consistent with the upcoming experimental data for precision observables.

There will be opportunities for collaboration with other members of staff on both research topics. The Theoretical Physics group provides an internationally leading research and training environment for PhD students in the fields of particle physics phenomenology, multi-loop calculations, quantum field theory, lattice gauge theory, black holes and string theory. For more information on the group, see http://www.liv.ac.uk/mathematical-sciences/research/theoretical-physics/.

Prior background in particle physics phenomenology would be an advantage.  The project may involve the use of computer algebra systems or numerical methods, so some programming skills would be helpful but not necessary. The successful candidate should have or expect to have at least a II.1 degree or equivalent in Physics and/or Mathematics. Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Martin Gorbahn on 0151 794 3775, email martin.gorbahn@liverpool.ac.uk.

Applications until the deadline of 28th June 2013 are guaranteed to be considered. Early applications are encouraged. Please apply by sending an email to martin.gorbahn@liverpool.ac.uk and completing an application online at http://www.liv.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/applying/online.htm  Please mention the GTA in Particle Physics Phenomenology in the box about possible sources of funding. Supporting documents for your application should include and can be submitted online when applying:

 •School or college transcripts/certificates

 •University transcripts & Degree certificates

•Evidence of English Language proficiency (EU applicants only)

 •Personal statement

 •Two references

•Research proposal (for PhD applicants only if applicable)
