Management School hosts 'AI technologies and the future of management' workshop

Across 21-22 September the Management School hosted a two-day ‘AI technologies and the future of management’ workshop that set out to discuss the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the future of management practice, research and education.

The workshop highlighted current issues surrounding the increasing levels of automation and augmentation in the ways we live, work and do business and brought together the Management School’s Centre for Organisational and Employee Wellbeing (COEW) and the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies.

Hosted by COEW Director Professor Damian O’Doherty and Professor Mike Zundel, the two-day event saw a range of academics, students, businesses and policymakers in attendance. Contributions came from a wide array of speakers with specialist business and management backgrounds in areas such as cybernetics, critical management studies and institutional theory.

Dr Ziyun Fan, University of York, commented that “it was a great honour to participate and speak at this important event which I think will become a landmark for future management studies of AI”.

With keynote speeches followed by a roundtable discussion and debate, a research paper competition, paper development sessions and a closing plenary with leading thinkers on critical pedagogy, the workshop proved to be an illuminating insight into current discourse surrounding the impact of AI on the world of work, research and education.

Professor Christine Moser, a speaker at the event, commented that “AI is going to fundamentally change the way management operates and the way work organisations function. This event marked the start of a serious effort by those concerned with organizational and employee well-being to take AI seriously and to work out ways of best responding and engaging with its technologies”.
