The Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences is delighted to announce two new senior appointments to its Institute Leadership Team.

Professor Mandy Peffers  has been appointed as Head of Department for Musculoskeletal and Ageing Science, while new recruit Professor Reinhold Medina is joining the Institute as Head of Department for Eye and Vision Science.

Professor Peffers said: “I am incredibly honoured to be trusted in this role and to follow in the footsteps of Professor Graham Kemp and everyone who has made the Musculoskeletal and Ageing Science  Department what it is today - a great place of scientific discovery, driven by the urge to question and challenge.

“Our internationally recognised department is on a continuous journey. This is what excites me and attracts international researchers, clinicians, and postgraduate students: it’s the stimulation, the sense of possibility, the innovation, and I am proud to be taking an even more active part in this through my appointment.

“Our main resource is our people, and I will do everything I can to support our community building on its considerable achievements through the new era of ambition within Strategy 2031.”

Professor Reinhold Medina is currently Professor of Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at Queen's University Belfast, and fellow of the Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine.

Professor Medina said: “I am thrilled to share the news of my appointment as the new head of the Department of Eye and Vision Sciences. I am really looking forward to joining the Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences and engaging with faculty and students.

“My vision for the future of the Department is one of ambition and innovation, which aligns seamlessly with the University of Liverpool strategic framework 2031. I am confident that, as a team, we will explore new frontiers of Eye and Vision Science and make discoveries of international impact, for the benefit of our local society.”

Both Mandy and Reinhold will commence their posts in January 2024.

The Institute would like to thank the outgoing Heads of Departments, Professor Graham Kemp (Musculoskeletal and Ageing Science) and Professor Rachel Williams (Eye and Vision Sciences), for all their hard work and success during their tenures.
