This module is mapped against A2.2 level in Mandarin according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for students who have completed Level 3 (CHINX903/003) or have a Mandarin A2.1 standard of the language in the CEFR. Through a variety of methods students will develop an Intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Mandarin and an understanding of Intermediate Mandarin grammar. At the end of this 12-week module, students will have reached an A2.2 level in the CEFR and will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Students Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. They will have a good understanding of life and culture of Mandarin-speaking countries and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

- Taking about room furniture and location
- Making and responding to a request
- Writing comments about a hotel’s location, facilities and service
Week 6
- Identifying specific information about the rules in a museum
- Understanding simple descriptions about historical periods and objects in an online post
Week 7
- Asking and answering questions about rules and signs
- Writing about a historical period
Week 8
- Identifying features or tastes of different cuisines
- Understanding exchanges about orders at a restaurant
- Identifying ingredients and cooking steps of a recipe

Week 12:
- Written and speaking tests will take place this week. Completing the assessment is required for students taking the course as part of their degree. For all other students, taking the tests is also strongly recommended, as a measure of your progress and learning.

Study Hours
The total number of study hours for this module is 150 hours, in line with undergraduate university modules. This includes class meetings, assessment preparation and self-directed study in line with guidance from the course lecturer.
If you are studying on the extracurricular mode, we recognise that the total number of hours that you may be able to study every week may depend on your availability and previous experience studying languages, however, expected contribution to classes, homework completion, and learning outcomes will not vary.

I am a Mandarin teacher at the Confucius Institute of the University of Liverpool. I teach Mandarin at universities, colleges and primary schools. For the past 7 years I have been working at Xi'an Jiaotong University, teaching all levels of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Fees for language courses are £180/£90.
