Modern languages degrees

A modern languages degree gives you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the literary, historical, cinematic, political and linguistic context of a diverse and unique set of world cultures. Our department constantly innovating to offer new programmes and new teaching approaches.

Available to all undergraduate and postgraduate students

At undergraduate level you can choose which level to learn a language at with confidence, knowing that we are specialists in teaching languages to all levels. Beginners will benefit from our years of experience in accompanying students in the first steps of their chosen language; advanced students will find their knowledge broadened and deepened.

A year abroad

You have the opportunity to broaden your understanding of language and culture with a year abroad. You can can spend your third year teaching English, attending university, completing a work placement or working for a non-government organisation (NGO), in one or more countries, relevant to the language or languages you are studying.

Postgraduate Research study

Postgraduate Research study with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures gives you the chance to develop an understanding of the literary, historical, cinematic, political and linguistic context of a wide range of world cultures. Working closely with a supervisor in your chosen area, you will join a vibrant postgraduate research community and benefit from training and development tailored to your needs.
