Course Description 

This module is mapped against the A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for students who have completed ARABX902/002, Arabic Beginners 2, or for those with basic knowledge of the language.

Through a variety of methods students will develop an elementary competence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking and an understanding of elementary Arabic grammar, such as masculine and feminine plurals. At the end of this 12-weeks module students will be half-ways towards an A2 proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out everyday tasks in Arabic and to attempt unfamiliar ones. For example, they will be able to follow and hold a simple conversation and function in daily life using the language. They will have a good understanding of life and culture of some of the countries where the language is spoken and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

Extensive and in-depth revision of the previous levels including:

  • Description of people and social relationships
  • Holidays & Occasions
  • Relatives and social events
  • Travel
  • New Home
  • Health & Food
  • Recreation, entertainment, and public services

Grammatical content:

  • Connected and separate pronouns
  • Masculine and feminine plural and Deuteronomy
  • Present tense verb and its conjugation with pronouns
  • Past tense and its conjugation of pronouns
  • Commands and conjugating it with pronouns
  • Using adjectives 

Cultural Content:

  • Use cultural expressions in a variety of context

The book will be freely available on Canvas.

 

Study Hours

If you are taking the curricular mode, the total number of study hours is approximately 150 hours, in line with undergraduate university modules. This includes class meetings, assessment preparation and self-directed study in line with guidance from the course lecturer.

If you are studying on the extracurricular mode, the total number of hours may depend on your availability and previous experience studying languages, however, expected learning outcomes and contribution to classes (preparation and completion of homework) will not vary.

Please note that the ‘last date available to book’ date is only a guide. We reserve the right to close bookings earlier if courses are over- or under-subscribed. In order to avoid disappointment, please be sure enrol as soon as possible. Registrations will not be processed until the following day if received after 3pm. 

Course Lecturer: Saddam Alhamoud

Saddam Alhamoud is an upcoming PhD candidate, renowned Arabic language teacher, and educational consultant. He holds a Master of Arts degree in TASOL from King Saud University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arabic literature and science from Aleppo University. With vast experience teaching at prestigious institutions and authoring influential publications, he has revolutionised Arabic language education for non-native speakers. His expertise and dedication continue to inspire students and enrich the field of Arabic language teaching.
