Here’s what happens to your IT account
If you're finishing your studies at the University of Liverpool, your IT (MWS) account — including your University email, M Drive and access to some University systems — will be closed.
Before that happens, we recommend you:
- Save any important emails
- Back up your M Drive
- Download anything you need from Canvas

When will my IT (MWS) account close?
Your IT (MWS) account remains active until after your official end date (or graduation date, if later). You will receive a closure notice via email two weeks in advance.
I want to keep files from my M Drive – how do I do that?
Once your IT (MWS) account is closed, all content will be permanently deleted. Make sure you save anything you want to keep to personal storage before then as we can’t recover files after closure.
I want to keep my @liverpool.ac.uk email address – how do I do that?
Unless you have a confirmed place for postgraduate study at the University of Liverpool, your email will close after your official end date (or graduation date, if later). We cannot provide access after this date.
Can I forward emails from my @liverpool.ac.uk email address after it closes?
Yes, you can set up an email redirect, which forwards your emails to another account, even after your @liverpool.ac.uk email address is closed.

I’ve applied for postgraduate study at University of Liverpool — what happens to my account?
If you haven’t been accepted before your official end date (or graduation date, if later), your IT (MWS) account will close.
Once your place is confirmed, you’ll get a new account and onboarding details via the email you used to apply. Please make sure you have not used your @liverpool.ac.uk email in your application.
I have a confirmed place for postgraduate study here at University of Liverpool. What will happen to my account?
If your place is confirmed before your official end date (or graduation date, if later), your IT (MWS) account will automatically transition to a postgraduate account.
You’ll keep your undergraduate account details e.g. username and email address, and access to relevant systems and services.
I used my @liverpool.ac.uk email for job or course applications and I need to access it.
Unless you have a confirmed place for postgraduate study at the University of Liverpool, your email will close after your official end date (or graduation date, if later).
Emails sent to your address after closure won’t be delivered and cannot be recovered.
If you’ve used your University email for applications, update your contact details and set up an email redirect as soon as possible.
Will I lose access to Canvas?
Yes, and it happens earlier than your IT (MWS) account closure. Once your studies are marked complete, your Canvas access ends, even if your email and M Drive still work.
Please contact the Service Desk if you need access until your IT (MWS) account closes.
Will I lose access to Handshake?
No, you will still have access to Handshake after graduation. You can also continue to use:
- Careers advice and support
- Events and job opportunities
- LivUni Mentors and Careers Coaches
- The Graduate Outcomes Survey

Can I keep my subscription to Microsoft Office?
No. Once you stop being a student and your IT (MWS) account closes, you will no longer have a subscription to Microsoft Office through University of Liverpool.
Can I still access the library and library services?
Yes, graduates of the University of Liverpool are welcome to join the Library as Alumni members.

How can I stay in touch with the University and access my alumni benefits?
The University of Liverpool Alumni Relations team invites you to provide a valid personal email to stay in touch via this form. By updating your contact details, you’ll continue to receive University updates, alumni newsletters, exclusive benefits, and event invitations after graduation.

I have verified student status with third party services, such as UniDays, using my email. Will this still work once my account is closed?
You can verify your student status using your @liverpool.ac.uk email until your account closes.
After that, it depends on the service — some, like UniDays, only require annual verification.
