Heseltine Institute Policy Briefing 3(24)

How inclusive workplace support can unlock employment potential for UK working families

Drawing on research from the Future Families Work network, this policy briefing by Dr Laura Radcliffe, Dr Rachel Ashman, Hannah Musiyarira and Dr Anneke Schaefer   proposes measures to improve access to flexible and inclusive work for families of all kinds. The Employment Rights Bill, expected to become law later this year, marks a positive step in providing working families with more rights and protections. However, more can be done at both the policy level and by employers to ensure equitable access to flexible working arrangements for all families.

The briefing calls for ‘flexible work by design’, embedded into job roles, and a move from ‘fixed flex’ to genuine and inclusive flexibility. The briefing is a timely contribution to ongoing policy discussion about how to improve workplace participation in an increasingly complex employment landscape.
