Dr Mark Carawan

Mark Carawan has a wealth of experience in governance, risk management, regulatory compliance, audit, ethics, conduct and culture matters globally. Mark is currently a Senior Advisor at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in New York, and a Senior Fellow at the New York University School of Law Program for Corporate Compliance and Enforcement (PCCE). Mark is Advisory Board Chair at 1LoD, the information services company which provides intelligence to risk and control practitioners managing non-financial risks, and is a Board member, member of the Board Risk Committee, and Chair of the Board Audit Committee at the clearing bank start-up The Bank of London in the UK.

Mark’s professional career includes most recently serving in New York as Citigroup’s Chief Compliance Officer and member of the Citigroup Executive Committee. Mark had previously served as the Citigroup Chief Internal Auditor. Mark’s responsibilities involved leading management’s activities with various Board Committees, including: the Audit Committee, the Ethics, Conduct and Culture Committee, the AML Committee, the Compliance Committee. Additionally, Mark presented regularly to the Board Risk Committee and the Group Board on a range of governance, risk management, compliance and control topics. Mark also served as the co-chair, together with the Group CEO, of the Group Business Risk and Control Committee and was the co-chair of Citigroup’s Disability Affinity Group.

Prior to these assignments, Mark was the Barclays Group Chief Internal Auditor based in London. Mark had formerly been a partner both at Deloitte, specializing in enterprise-wide risk management, and at Andersen, where he managed the Privatization and Emerging Markets Division, focusing on financial sector restructuring and privatization projects globally, often as part of economic development programs coordinated with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and various central banks, ministries of finance and supervisory agencies. In both firms Mark served as a Trustee and Board member of the respective retirement/pension funds. Mark’s assignments overseas have covered nearly 100 countries including extended postings in over a dozen jurisdictions. Prior to Mark’s consultancy roles, he performed external audits reporting on financial services companies.

Mark received his B.A. in Classics with Distinction from Rutgers University in the USA, a Ph.D. in Humanity from St. Andrews University in the United Kingdom, and is both a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Internal Auditor. Mark, an Eagle Scout, is Chair of the Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America, and is a Corporation Member at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, and a member of their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Mark recently stepped down from the Board of the global Institute of Internal Auditors, where he served as Audit Committee Chair and had Chaired the Financial Services Guidance Committee. Mark was previously a member of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors, where he served as Chair and President.
