Athena SWAN champion lead on Gold award, 2014

'Improving gender equality in science - a personal perspective from Biology@York'

Abstract

I am a Professor of ecology at the University of York, and was the Biology Department Athena SWAN champion leading on our successful Gold award in 2014. I am currently the Athena SWAN champion for the Faculty of Sciences (covering 10 STEMM departments; 2 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze awards), and sit on the University AS steering committee. I will discuss the Biology Department's progress along its pathway to achieving gender equality, and factors that I think were important in our success in improving equality for staff and students (e.g. in relation to recruitment and promotions). I will also discuss areas where there is still much more to be done and the obstacles and challenges we face in making these changes. I am keen to share best-practice in methods to achieve gender equality and to use evidence-based approaches to make changes. I will also highlight why gender equality is vital in science.
