The Department of Economics is pleased to host the Inaugural North by NorthWest (NXNW) Applied Labour Conference on Thursday 7 July 2022 at the Management School. The conference brings together leading experts in the field of Labour Economics to present their ongoing research, gain valuable feedback, and strengthen networks for future collaboration.

28 and 29 June 2022

The Money Marco Finance Society met on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 June for their in-person “Econometric and Big Data Analyses of Global Economy, Financial Markets and Economic Policies” conference. The conference aims to bring together a substantial number of leading academics and central bank policy researchers from around the world to discuss, disseminate and debate about their cutting-edge research on the most important economic and policy issues in the post-Brexit and post-Covid era.

The conference is open to the public, and MMF will also be able to sponsor its members (which include practitioners, entrepreneurs, and policy makers ) for the participation of this conference. Hence, it is also an important knowledge exchange opportunity.

30 May 2022

The Accounting and Finance group and the Economics group have jointly organized an international speaker talk by Dr. Yi Li, who is the Principal Economist of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, on 30 May.

Dr Li received her Ph.D in Economics from Princeton University in 2014 and has since been working as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board. Her research interests include banking and financial institutions, financial markets, asset pricing, investment behaviors, and lending relationships.

Dr. Valeria Andreoni, Senior Lecturer in Economics, has been selected to join the Peer Review College of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The AHRC's Peer Review College is composed by members from higher education institution and independent research organisations, both in UK and overseas. Members provide expert reviews of grant proposals across the range of the AHRC's schemes and have a fundamental role in ensuring that the highest quality research proposals receive funding in accordance with robust and transparent decision-making process.

10 December 2021

On December 10, the US Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council’s (OSAC) hosted an online webinar, titled “Are Women Better Crisis Leaders?”. The two speakers were Dr. Supriya Garikipati (of University of Liverpool) and Liz Granger (of FIS). Dr. Garikipati talked about her work  Does Gender Really Matter ?, while Ms Granger spoke of her experiences in the private sector, validating Dr. Garikipati’s findings that female leadership tends to result in faster decision-making and lives saved. Both speakers echoed the need for thought and leadership skills to emphasize an empathetic approach to crisis management and for women to continue to lift each other up and advocate for inclusion. The event concluded with both speakers offering practical advice to hone skills inherent to women -- empathy, efficiency, speed, and relationship building -- to the over 160 attendees representing 14 countries and 74 disparate industries, including academia.

British Academy, London on 4-6 October 2021

Supriya British Academy conference

Dr Supriya Garikipati was invited by the British Academy to give a keynote at their Menstrual Experiences Conference.

Over 150 delegates from all over the world joined this hybrid conference that happened at the British Academy, London on 4-6 October 2021. In her talk, Dr Garikipati explored the role of informed choice in alleviating period poverty in the Global South. She discussed the results of a recently concluded 3-arm randomised trial that experimented with giving women information on a range of period products along with the opportunity to try some of these. The findings of this trial indicate that as a policy tool, informed choice, has the potential to stir menstrual hygiene management in a sustainable direction both for consumers and their eco-systems.

20-21 May 2021

The 9th Annual Workshop of the Econometrics and Big Data Research Cluster took place over two days in May 2021 and welcomed speakers from a number of universities and companies including Aarhus University, Oxford University, University of Liverpool, Fudan University, ESSEC Business School and the Bank of Canada.
