Patricia Routledge

Dame Patricia Routledge DBE

Award-winning actor, singer and comedian, Dame Patricia Routledge (BA Hons English Language & Literature 1951, Hon LittD 1999) discovered her passion for music and performance while studying at the University of Liverpool. We were grateful for the late Dame Patricia's support as an ambassador to the Yoko Ono Lennon Centre.

How did your experiences as a student at Liverpool shape your life and your career?

“My experiences as a student at the University of Liverpool defined the rest of my life. I went to read English Language and Literature in order to communicate through teaching and it was while I was there, very active with the Dramatic Society and Music Society that a turmoil took place as to whether to go into theatre or take up a classical music career."

Why are you supporting this campaign?

“I believe music is the purest art form and all the arts should be encouraged. They are the soul of a nation.

“I’ve chosen to support wholeheartedly, the Music Performance Space project because I think it is essential to the wellbeing and health of the human spirit.

“If you have a specific home people know where to find you and they become interested in what the programmes are going to be and it becomes a stronger focus for attention.

See Dame Patricia discuss why she supported our campaign here:
