Joint Inaugural Lecture: Professor Kathy Burrell and Professor Peter North

Staff, students and the general public invited to the Yoko Ono Lennon Centre for the Joint Inaugural lecture of Professor Kathy Burrell Professor Peter North taking place on Thursday, 14 March at 5.30pm.
Kathy Burrell, Professor of Migration Geographies, University of Liverpool is entitled ‘Moving Lives: Migration Stories across Time and Space’. Kathy reflects on the research she has undertaken on Polish and Ukrainian migration, from Second World War refugee movements right up to the current Homes for Ukraine hosting scheme. Her talk picks out four examples from this work - telling and sharing Polish refugee memories of World War Two displacement; sending things across borders to keep in touch; navigating immigration and government identification systems; and fleeing the invasion of Ukraine. Taken together these examples not only demonstrate the importance of specific times and spaces in shaping migration experiences, but also illustrate the enduring universal reach and power of migration stories.
Peter North, Professor of Alternative Economies, at the University of Liverpool inaugural lecture is entitled ‘Reimagining Prosperity: Postcapitalist alternatives for how we can live well together’.
Pete explores fresh ideas for a better future given the current climate crisis. By refusing to accept the dominance of free market values, he shows how people have experimented with new forms of money, alternative models of being entrepreneurial, with better ways to organise our communities, and finally with new conceptions of what it means to live 'well' together. Pete envisions hopeful alternatives to what is considered a currently unsustainable path, suggesting that what we need to do is work to make these alternatives better rather than assuming they don’t work or bemoaning our fate.
Following the Lectures by Pete and Kathy and a response from Professor Sarah Marie Hall from the University of Manchester, there will be a drinks reception in the foyer of the Yoko Ono Lennon Centre.
