Jo graduated from Glasgow in 1986 and since then, she has worked both in academia and in general and referral practice. She was an intern (1986-87) and resident (1989-92) in Glasgow. Here, she gained the RCVS Certificate and Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology and a Masters degree in Veterinary Neurology. She moved to Edinburgh for a temporary lectureship in veterinary cardiology (1994-95). She remained in Edinburgh for PhD studies in canine dilated cardiomyopathy (awarded in 1999). She continued her research (1999-2002) as a Post-doc, into the genetics of dilated cardiomyopathy in Newfoundland dogs, funded by the British Heart Foundation, based at the MRC Human Genetics Unit. Jo is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) (2003) and has been an RCVS recognized Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology since 1994. She was Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Cardiology at the University of Glasgow between 2002 and 2004, before moving to Liverpool. Jo has previously served on the ECVIM-CA Cardiology education committee, which overseas cardiology residency training programmes throughout Europe. In 2008, she was awarded the BSAVA Blaine award, for services to veterinary cardiology and cardiology education. In 2016, she was awarded a personal chair (professorship) in veterinary cardiology, and in 2017, she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, for meritorious contributions to clinical practice.

Clinical Interests

All aspects of cardiology, but especially:

  • Feline and canine cardiomyopathies
  • Echocardiography
  • Management of congestive heart failure
  • Genetics of cardiac diseases

Teaching Interests

  • Jo leads the clinical rotation in cardiology, with all senior veterinary students spending one week with the Cardiology Service, with a few students returning for the cardiology elective.
  • Jo leads the cardiology and respiratory medicine teaching in the 3rd and 4th year “management of disease” course.
  • Jo is the small animal “management of disease” subject coordinator for the 3rd year and 4th year course, pre-rotations.
  • Jo is chair of the Undergraduate Board of Studies.
