

Hi, I’m Yakun Tang and you can call me Melody. I chose the 2016/17 honours project of Prof. Beynon and I might be the first Chinese student in his honours projects. As an undergraduate student in Biochemistry, the honours project is a great opportunity to learn a lot of things and develop research skills. I will work hard and I’m so happy to join in CPR family!
Join an international synthetic biology competition as a team member
2015 XJLTU iGEM team, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, 111 Ren ai Road, Suzhou industrial Park, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China March 2015 – September 2015
iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) is an international competition in synthetic biology and that was the first time XJTLU participated in that competition. I conducted the lab work for 3 months and wrote part of the project description on our team website (http://2015.igem.org/Team:XJTLU-CHINA). I also managed financial affairs and was responsible for items purchasing. I participated ''human practice'' as well, such as participating iGEM meet up in Shanghai. Through this experience, I enhanced my lab skills, learned how to organize a project on our own and improved my team work capacity.

I learned main lab skills of biochemical and molecular biological experiments, including protein purification and western blot, plasmid DNA extraction, genes transformation into bacteria and gene transfection into cancer cells under the supervising of a master student in that lab. I participated in both the experiments and seminars of the lab, and discussed the experimental plan with my supervisor. After this work experience, I got a basic understanding of lab work in modern biological science area.

Full House of XJTLU is a store for charity that built by students. The store sells second-hand products that collected from students and use the selling profit to do charity. I was a member of Full House, and I participated in collecting second-hand products in school and selling goods in the store.
