ULMS hosts Business Breakfast: "How the Port enables the future sustainable growth of the LCR."

The University of Liverpool Management School welcomed 50 businesses from across the Liverpool City Region to its first Business Breakfast of 2024, in collaboration with Corporate Partners Peel Ports Group and Growth Platform on Wednesday 31st January.

The theme of the event was "How the Port enables the future sustainable growth of the LCR" and the session consisted of two presentations followed by an interactive panel session, Chaired by Stephen Carr, Commercial Director at Peel Ports Group.

Dr Cagatay Iris, Senior Lecturer in Operations and Supply Chain Management at ULMS gave an engaging presentation on "Sustainable transition in the Port – Shipping – City interface", and explicitly discussed the impact of near-zero emission aspirations, digitalisation and green port projects on our Liverpool City Region.



Gavin Quinn, Head of Commercial Development at Growth Platform focused his presentation on changes and opportunities in global supply chains, the role of the Port of Liverpool, the Combined Authority’s increasingly focused and holistic approach to driving economic growth and how we need to be more proactive, focused and competitive to attract investment into the Liverpool City Region as a result of the UK’s changing status as a location for foreign direct investment.

The panel was composed of Ruth Wood (CEO, Mersey Maritime), Gavin Quinn (Head of Commercial Development, Growth Platform), Dr Cagatay Iris (Senior Lecturer in Operations and Supply Chain Management, ULMS) and Prof Dongping Song (Professor of Supply Chain Management, ULMS).

The discussion delved into key topics such as digitalisation, skills and talent retention, automation in shipping and freight, as well as carbon capture and decarbonisation.
