Published on

Last week, the University of Liverpool Management School Alumni team hosted a panel session as part of their ‘Getting Ahead’ series. The event featured distinguished alumni who shared their career journeys, discussed their current roles in the Liverpool city region, and highlighted their experiences so far at EY, Peel Ports Group, Leafyard, and OPEN Media.

The alumni panel consisted of:

Michael Davies - Partnerships & Marketing Executive at OPEN Media

Michael studied International Business at the University and graduated in 2018, and after trying the traditional graduate scheme process, opted to join a Liverpool based SME which has seen tremendous growth over the last 4 years and is now a national outfit.

Hannah Byrne - Audit Associate at EY

Hannah studied Business Economics at the University of Liverpool, finishing her degree in 2020 and graduating in 2022 (due to covid). Following the completion of her undergraduate degree, she went on to study a master’s in Insurance and Risk Management. In 2021, she started a graduate programme at EY as an Audit Associate. She will be a chartered accountant when the programme finishes in 2024.

Callum Kemp - Assistant Group Management Accountant at Peel Ports Group

Callum studied an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance, and progressed to a master’s in Accounting and Finance the year after, graduating in December 2022. Following the completion of his Masters, he was offered a job at Peel Ports Group as an Assistant Group Management Accountant, based at the Port of Liverpool near Crosby. He is currently working towards becoming a qualified Management Accountant through CIMA, within the next couple of years.

Laura Impastato Ahedo - Operations Associate at Leafyard

Laura studied International Business with a Year in Industry at the University of Liverpool and graduated in 2020. During her Year in Industry, she worked as a Web Content Administrator at iSi GmbH, based in Germany. She currently works as an Operations Associate at Leafyard, a mental fitness app for businesses, teams, and offices.

During the panel session, the alumni panellists discussed their journeys from graduation to where they are now, highlighting the importance of perseverance and continuous learning. They also spoke about working in the Liverpool city region, underlining the opportunities and vibrant professional landscape the city has to offer.

Advice that all the panellists emphasised was to always say "yes" to opportunities, even if they seem challenging at first and that building a strong network through events like ‘Getting Ahead’ and platforms like Linkedin, is crucial for career development.

Michael Davies, alumni speaker said “It was an absolute pleasure to be asked to speak on this panel for  the University of Liverpool Management School, talking a bit about my career journey so far and giving some advice and insight to recent graduates.

We extend our thanks to the attendees and the alumni speakers for their contributions to the event.
