Earlier this month, some final year Marketing and Business Management students and academic staff, Dr Ahmed Al- Abdin, Dr Rachel Spence and Dr Martyn Bradley went on a field trip to Cardiff. This joint programme initiative was for students completing a module centred around marketing strategy.

Students were kept busy with visits to UK Government’s Ty William Morgan Building, Principality Stadium, Golley Slater, Cowshed and Senedd Cymru, and Welsh Parliament.

During the trip, students completed an experimental marketing project. As part of this, they needed to produce a 5-minute video or 5-page electronic scrapbook, which promoted Cardiff as a positive destination venue.

Trips like this are an excellent way of linking theory in the classroom to industry. Commenting on the success of this trip, Dr Al-Abdin remarked: “The Cardiff field trip was a huge success and students had a phenomenal time, made possible by our fantastic industry partners that formed the exceptional trip itinerary. Our students were able to demonstrate experiential marketing in action. The employability implications and transferrable skills from such a trip are massive. The trip has also been a great way to enhance a sense of community amongst both students to students and students and staff”.

Students commented:

“The itinerary included visits to many inspirational organisations within the marketing industry as well as some of the most important cultural and public service institutions in the country. It also enabled coursemates to get closer as future professionals and friends. I’d recommend the trip to anyone”

“Before the field trip, the mere thought of entering the world of work left me feeling apprehensive and unsure of my future. However, during the trip, my perspective underwent a remarkable change as I was exposed to numerous opportunities that lie ahead, and I am now excited for the possibilities that await me”

“The trip provided a great way to work closely with people from outside of my course. It was nice getting to meet new people in a more relaxed and fun environment”.

“The trip was a brilliant opportunity for us to gain valuable insight into what it’s like working in marketing in different sectors. It was also great spending time with coursemates who share similar goals and visions. This helped a lot to formulate ideas for the final Marketing Strategy report”.
