Dr Nick Papageorgiadis, Senior Lecturer in International Business at the University of Liverpool Management School, recently gave a key note speech at the PATLIB17 conference, held in Munich on the 3 and 4 May 2017.

With nearly two hundred professionals present at the event, PATLIB2017 is a conference open to all staff of the European Patent Office’s (EPO) member states and to all staff working in recognised patent information centres.

In conjunction with his research, Nick delivered a session on “Assessing the impact of IP protection and enforcement systems on patenting strategies”. The talk discussed the latest research which determines the effectiveness of patent systems. As part of this, Nick was able to showcase a new tool that measures the effectiveness of patent systems across 49 countries, made publicly available by the University of Liverpool. His talk demonstrated how patent systems have positively impacted global firms, using the newly developed tool as an example of how companies can generate valuable input for different elements of their patent strategy decision-making.

Nick's research on national patent systems has been published in a number prestigious academic journals and has already had an impact on the work of patent and IP counsellors within international firms. He is currently leading multiple research projects in the areas of patent systems and patent strategy. In addition, Nick researches the role of the strength of a country's patent system in stimulating or hampering innovation, trade, foreign direct investment, and economic growth.

The President of EPO commented: “Now, more than ever, there is a need to support inventors by providing them with clear and understandable IP guidance. The role of patent information in the innovation process is clear. One of our primary aims is to ensure that European inventors are able to exploit this patent information and the tools we offer”.

In attendance at the two-day conference was Richard Flammer, Principal Director, and European Patent Office who hosted the event and Benoît Battistelli, President of the European Patent Office.
