Black History Month at Blackwell's

Blackwell's have curated a reading list of works related to Black history and culture, there are also events being held at Blackwell's on the University campus with Gretchen Gerzina and Kehinde Andrews.

Take a look at the reading list and add some books to your to-read pile, there are books suitable for all ages including some childrens books.

20 October - Black England with Gretchen Gerzina

Gretchen Gerzina will be talking about her book, Black England.

The idea that Britain became a mixed-race country after 1945 is a common mistake. Georgian England had a large and distinctive Black community. Whether prosperous citizens or newly freed slaves, they all ran the risk of kidnap and sale to plantations. Black England tells their dramatic, often moving stories.

1 November - The New Age Of Empire, Kehinde Andrews in conversation

Kehinde Andrews (Associate Professor in Sociology at the School of Social Sciences at Birmingham City University) will be discussing his latest book The New age of Empire - how racism and colonialism still rule the world. Kehinde will be talking about how genocide, slavery and colonialism are the key foundation stones upon which the West was built and that we are still living under this system today.
