Enterprise Story: Daniel

Posted on: 15 December 2023 by Richard Finch in Enterprise

Daniel Duffy is a Class of 2022 Medicine graduate who is now working as a Doctor at the NHS Royal Cornwall Hospital and has set up his own business, ReallyLife.

My degree, obviously, has helped get in getting my full-time job, but in terms of my business ventures, the University’s Enterprise team (based in Careers & Employability) was one of the biggest supporters of what I was building, both in terms of their teaching and funding opportunities.

My business, ReallyLife has developed an adaptakit that allows people to convert an ordinary button and zip trouser fastener into a Velcro Hook and Loop closure with an easy to pull zip. It takes less than one minute to install and is perfect for anyone that struggles with fastening buttons, for example, those who suffer from arthritis, parkinsons, or stroke.

My favourite experience after graduation has been being able to pursue my business interests alongside my job - I would not feel confident in doing this if I did not go after as many opportunities and receive support during my time as a student.

The most challenging part of my graduate journey has been adjusting to life as a Junior Doctor while trying to keep up out of work hobbies and interests.

My top 3 yips for current students and recent graduates.

1) Enjoy the University experience while making the most of the opportunities it affords

2) The transition to working a full-time job is taxing but try to keep up hobbies even if you have to do them less frequently

3) Try to develop employable skills outside of your degree and job - this will give you far more options when looking to advance or change careers – and it helps if these are hobbies that you enjoy!
