From first-year Marketing students to 19k views: Jess and Lucy on saying yes to experience
Jess and Lucy had only just started their Marketing degrees when an opportunity to create social media content for Get Sociable came along. Six months later, they’d interviewed strangers around Liverpool, worked on the Ask for Angela campaign, created a video that reached more than 19,000 views and become much closer friends along the way. We spoke to them about getting started, stepping in front of the camera and why sometimes you just have to say yes.

Molly is using student leadership to make big global issues feel more practical, collective and hopeful. As Co-President of Amnesty International Society, she has helped create a welcoming route into human-rights advocacy, including the Amnesty x Humanities Ball which brought more than 220 students together and raised £1,180. As a Young Climate Warriors Ambassador, she also works with Liverpool primary schools on climate education.

Mohamed: An EQ+ Celebration Series Highly Commended Story
Mohamed’s journey has been shaped by resilience, care and service. He moved to the UK at 17 to join his mother and sister after leaving Sri Lanka, and now balances his Law with Politics degree with caring responsibilities. He is a Liverpool Advocate supporting widening participation, while his previous leadership and community work in Sri Lanka included a blood donation campaign that collected more than 1,000 pints of blood and an eye-care project reaching more than 1,300 people.

Louis is a first-generation university student from Liverpool whose route through education and work has not been straightforward. After leaving university to take a trainee chartered accountant role, he made the difficult decision to return and study Business Management instead. Alongside his degree, he works in children’s residential care and supports other students through mentoring and advocacy.

Lucy has turned early imposter syndrome in a male-dominated engineering environment into a commitment to make STEM more welcoming for others. Through the University Motorsport Formula Student team, where she became Deputy Team Leader, engineering outreach and her role as Hockey Club Captain, she is combining leadership, visibility and high performance.

Rufus: An EQ+ Celebration Series Highly Commended Story
During his Civil Service placement, Rufus has focused on social mobility, public service and community. He has volunteered with young people who are out of education or work through the Spear programme, helped deliver school outreach about public-sector careers to almost 100 students, and set up a Civil Service Padel Club that has brought colleagues together while raising more than £500 for domestic abuse charity DASH.

Roman is a mature student, refugee and first-generation university student whose route into higher education has been defined by resilience. Originally from Russia, he is a traveller at heart, always looking for new experiences, cultures and adventures. He has travelled around the world and recently returned from three weeks volunteering in Thailand.

As a Year 1 MBChB Course Representative, Mazen has made student voice a real part of the conversation. He gathers feedback through forums and everyday chats, takes key themes to senior staff and makes sure students hear what happens next. He has also created a structured way to share topics students find difficult after assessments, helping inform review lectures and academic support.

Daisy is balancing Civil Engineering with volunteering, peer support and advocacy. Her own experience of starting university while living with physical disabilities and personal challenges has made her someone other students feel able to turn to. Through the EDI committee and her mentoring at UCLH, she is helping other young people feel heard, supported and less alone.
