Progress to Postgrad: Jasmina
Posted on: 1 August 2026 by Richard Finch in Class of 2025
Jasmina Rai, a Class of 2025 MESci Geology and Geophysics graduate, continued their academic journey at the University of Oxford, pursuing a DPhil in Earth Sciences and building on the foundations of their University of Liverpool degree.
What motivated you to pursue postgraduate study, and when did you realise it was the right path for you?
I have been interested in research since secondary school, especially in seismology and planetary science. I really enjoyed my time as an undergraduate, so knew that a PhD would interest me then.
What were the biggest challenges you faced during the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study, and how did you overcome them?
I think there is an element of imposter syndrome, when you might feel like you're not as good as everyone else. Fortunately, I have joined a supportive research group, who collaborate with each other and make me feel more confident. I've also already learned quite a lot and try to focus on my own progress rather than comparing myself to others.
Is there anything you are doing outside of your studies that has supported you development whilst studying?
I've always been involved in a lot of sport, including climbing, squash and swimming. I used to work at the uni sports centre in Liverpool, which was really good fun and gave me a break from studying. I made a lot of friends through sport and continue to do that in Oxford.
If you could give future grads one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don't give up - I think perseverance is very important in any career.
