Progress to Postgrad: Emma
Posted on: 6 August 2026 by Richard Finch in Class of 2025
Emma Smith graduated with a BA in Geography and subsequently pursued an MCD in Town and Regional Planning at the University of Liverpool. This progression allowed them to build on the knowledge and skills developed during their undergraduate studies while further specialising in their chosen field and advancing their academic and professional interests.
What motivated you to pursue postgraduate study, and when did you realise it was the right path for you?
It was something I had been gaining interest in throughout my undergraduate degree, by taking modules relevant to planning, and I saw it as a good application of my BA Geography degree. It was a decision I made in second semester of 3rd year to officially apply when I heard about scholarship opportunities. I received the 'Planning skills fund' scholarship from the British chamber of commerce, which supported me to complete my master’s degree.
What were the biggest challenges you faced during the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study, and how did you overcome them?
The workload was a challenge but a positive one as I learned new skills such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and did career relevant projects. I felt that I left the course with a well-rounded grasp on what the industry would be like.
Is there anything you are doing outside of your studies that has supported your development whilst studying?
During my master’s I was part of PLACED a social enterprise company which works to inform the public of the planning process. Whilst working with them I went on tours of planning developments in Liverpool such as the 'Liverpool waters’ development and attended a conference called REGEN, where they supported us in networking.
If you could give future grads one piece of advice, what would it be?
If you’re considering a master’s, then research courses thoroughly because if you find one you enjoy and in a city you love it will be one of the most challenging but fulling years.
