Progress to Postgrad: Emily
Posted on: 10 August 2026 by Richard Finch in Class of 2025
Emily Shaw graduated in 2025 with a BSc in Psychology and went on to study for an MA in Music Industry Studies at the University of Liverpool. Taking a new academic direction, they combined the skills and insights gained during their undergraduate degree with a growing interest in the music sector, broadening their knowledge in a dynamic and creative field.
What motivated you to pursue postgraduate study, and when did you realise it was the right path for you?
While doing my psychology undergrad, I was able to engage a lot with the music scene in Liverpool. I did lots of practical music stuff in venues during this time, but I still wanted to continue studying and experience more of the business side of the industry. I decided to research postgraduate courses for my new interests and found my Music Industry Studies course. It really complimented what I was already working towards!
What were the biggest challenges you faced during the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study, and how did you overcome them?
For me, totally changing subjects felt quite daunting. However, being in a smaller cohort with classmates and tutors who are equally as interested and passionate about the subject as you makes it all fizzle away. The workload can also feel like a jump, especially if you are working alongside the degree, but there is plenty of time and support offered to help you learn to manage it. By the end, it has not felt too different to time-managing the undergrad degree.
Is there anything you are doing outside of your studies that has supported your development whilst studying?
I work in a supermarket, so I have definitely developed my organisation skills to make sure my work gets done around shifts. I was also able to work as a student content creator this year which has been really fun, and aligned well with my course I think. I’ve also been able to do some social media things in my own time with a musician! I’ve definitely been able to grow my portfolio this year.
If you could give future grads one piece of advice, what would it be?
If there is something you are passionate about, take the leap, even if the change feels scary!
