Stepping Away: Sophia

Posted on: 18 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Sophia, a 2024 graduate with a BA in Film Studies and English, is now pursuing a Law Conversion Course at the University of Law.

How did you hear about your role and why did you decide to apply for it?

I attended an open day at the University of Liverpool.

How did you get to where you are now?

After speaking to a careers officer, they helped me tailor my CV and submit my application to the University. I had no prior knowledge of Law and reaching out was the first step towards my goal.

Your favourite experience?

Meeting new people and engaging with materials which I would not have otherwise done.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Accepting failure. Changing discipline was extremely challenging, and I often forgot that it's still new to me. Accepting that you might have to work a different way than you were used to. Change is scary, but it is necessary for growth. Acceptance is part of that!

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

You've got time! One thing I have realised after graduating is that it is so easy to compare yourself to others, especially if people find a job immediately. That is not the reality for most people, and it is okay to take a step back and realise that you are the one in control. You are building your future, and you can choose which direction to follow. Even if it might feel like you are behind others, you're not. Everyone's path is different and if it takes you a little longer, then that's okay!

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
