Stepping Away: Jacob

Posted on: 30 August 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Jacob Roseveare is a Class of 2024 BSc Physiotherapy graduate who is now working as an Audit Trainee at BDO.

How did you hear about your role and why did you decide to apply for it?

I learned about the best roles to apply to by networking and conducting research into the industry. Despite enjoying my clinical placements as a Physiotherapist, I knew it wasn’t the career for me. Instead, I found my former ambitions of a career in finance and felt that I would have greater opportunities and be better suited for a career in Audit.

How did you get to where you are now?

It has taken a lot of learning and resilience. Staying patient and optimistic throughout applications and seeking guidance from people who have walked a similar path have been important. Also getting my name out there and asking companies if they can help me get any experience. My main motivation has been having confidence that this is the path that I am meant to be on, and that I will be well suited to the role.

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

Learning a completely new set of skills and adapting to the unknown. Although scary, it has been profoundly rewarding and refreshing.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Stepping into the unknown. When I made the choice to change career path, I had to distance myself from the expectations of my family and friends. Starting with no plan but trusting that pieces would come together. The initial burden of not having a plan turned fruitful as I learned more and became more passionate about my new industry.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Do not be afraid. It’s fine not to have a clear plan. There will always be time to re-evaluate and ponder on what you want from life and what you want your future to look like.

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
