Progress to Postgrad: William

Posted on: 21 August 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

After graduating in 2024 with a BSc in Chemistry, William Jackson has continued his studies at the University of Sheffield, where he is undertaking an MSc in Polymer Chemistry.

How did you hear about your course?

I searched Polymer chemistry course in the UK and first saw the University of Sheffield, I decided to apply for the course and several others as I was still interested in studying and wanted to narrow the course range from Chemistry into a more specific subject/area.

How did you get to where you are now?

To get to the position I am in I had to demonstrate through my CV and cover letter that I had the relevant skills in order to complete the course. I also had to show them again through supporting documents that I would be a good fit for the University of Sheffield.

Your favourite thing about your current course?

My favourite experience as part of my course has been the research project. There is a lot more freedom to try new techniques and use new analytical equipment and software, something I enjoyed during my undergraduate degree. It is less tutor led than my undergraduate project so has, up to now, provided me with a clear scope as to what a career in research may look like.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my graduate journey has been to find what I am passionate about and what career path I want to choose. Completing the master course has enabled me to delve further into an area of chemistry that I enjoyed and found interesting during my undergraduate, enabling me to explore the possible routes to take my MSc degree when I have completed it.

Could you share one tip you wish you knew before you started

My number #1 golden nugget advice for future grads is to not rush into a decision about your future, whether it be a grad job or master’s course. try to find something you enjoy and that would give you good experience to improve your career prospects and trajectory.
