Progress to Postgrad: Sofia

Sofia is a Class of 2024 BA Geography graduate, now studying for a Master’s in Environmental Management and Leadership at the University of Nottingham.
How did you hear about your course?
I made the choice to continue my studies into a postgraduate degree because of the career I want to go into requires further education and a master's qualification. I chose to stay at home and go to University of Nottingham because I wanted to save money, as most people know this is incredibly difficult to do when living away from home!
How did you get to where you are now?
I got to where I am now when I realised how difficult getting a job is post graduating, I enjoy education and loved undergraduate, so I saw doing a master's as an opportunity to carry on in education and help me stand out as a job candidate.
Your favourite experience?
Master's courses have a lot less people on the course, mine having around 20, so honestly the best experience was having the opportunity to get to know everyone on my course. Also, the opportunity of being closer to lecturers, you get to really know each other and it makes the whole experience a lot more pleasant.
The most challenging part of your journey?
Navigating living back at home with my parents, you do lose an aspect of your independence and that can be difficult to adjust to!
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
Network on LinkedIn, it's a useful platform for finding jobs. Take any opportunity you can to gain experience to make you more attractive to employers. But also, be kind to yourself, graduating is hard - There is a lot of pressure graduating and being accepted onto a top graduate scheme but, it's okay to not be in the top job straight after graduating.
