Progress to Postgrad: Joe
Posted on: 24 August 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Joe Beagan is a Class of 2024 Civil Engineering graduate who is now studying at the University of Manchester for a Master’s in Engineering Project Management.
How did you hear about your course?
I decided to pursue Engineering Project Management at the University of Manchester after careful consideration and guidance. I knew I wanted a degree accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and wanted to start developing project management skills early in my career. I spoke to several industry professionals who advised me on the importance of choosing a course that combines technical understanding with real-world project leadership.
While studying Civil Engineering at the University of Liverpool, I realised I wanted to focus more on the management side of engineering. However, Liverpool didn’t offer an accredited, engineering-specific project management programme. I researched courses extensively - reading module descriptions, attending online seminars, and exploring past student experiences.
How did you get to where you are now?
The University of Manchester stood out to me. It offered the right balance between technical content and practical project leadership. It also felt like a natural fit—it had a similar academic feel to Liverpool, was commutable from home, and aligned with both my career ambitions and lifestyle. Ultimately, I trusted my gut and chose Manchester, knowing it would provide the foundation I need to grow into a successful project manager.
Getting to where I am now has taken a lot of hard work, dedication, and personal sacrifice. There were plenty of moments where I had to say no to things that seemed fun or tempting at the time, because I knew staying focused would benefit me in the long run. Balancing university work with life outside of it wasn’t always easy, but having hobbies like going to the gym and playing sports helped me manage stress and keep a clear head. Without those outlets, I honestly don’t think I’d have stayed as motivated or grounded.
I’ve also been lucky to have great support around me. My mum and dad have been a huge source of motivation—I’ve always wanted to make them proud. My friends have played a big role too; we pushed each other to improve, not just in university but also in life outside of academics. We kept each other accountable and encouraged each other to aim higher.
All of that—discipline, balance, and the people around me—has shaped the mindset I have today and helped me reach this point in my journey.
Your favourite thing about your current course?
One of my favourite experiences during my course so far has been meeting new people and building connections with students from all over the world. It’s been great to work alongside such a diverse group, sharing different perspectives and learning from each other’s backgrounds and experiences.
A particular highlight has been starting and helping run the Management of Projects Society. It’s given me the chance to take on responsibility outside of academics, contribute to the student community, and connect with people who share similar interests in project management. Being part of the society has really enriched my university experience, both socially and professionally.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging part of my graduate journey has been balancing the demands of the course with the reality of commuting. Travelling in and out of Manchester every day turned out to be far more tiring than I initially expected, and managing that alongside deadlines and group work took some adjustment.
Another big challenge has been mentally preparing for life after postgraduate study—realising that once the course ends, it’s straight into the job market. The pressure of finding the right role and the competitiveness of graduate opportunities can feel overwhelming at times. I’ve learned that the best way to deal with it is to stay focused and apply early and often, making job hunting part of my weekly routine so I can give myself the best chance possible.
Could you share one tip you wish you knew before you started
Take every opportunity you can—no matter how small it may seem at the time. Whether it’s doing a placement, joining a society, attending a webinar or seminar, or reaching out to someone in the industry, these experiences add up and really do make a difference.
Sometimes it might feel unappealing or like extra effort in the moment, but looking back, those are the things that open doors, build confidence, and set you apart. I wish I’d realised sooner just how valuable those small steps are in shaping your journey.
