Progress to Postgrad: Elen

Elen Jones is a class of 2024 Biological and Medical Sciences BSc graduate who went on to study at MSc Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Liverpool.

How did you hear about your course?

Throughout my undergraduate degree, I developed a keen interest in drug development. After deciding to pursue pharmacology modules in my final year I realised that this was the avenue I would like to explore further. I wanted to stay at the University of Liverpool as I had already experienced the high quality of teaching by the pharmacology department. After hearing about the Pharmacology and Toxicology MSc during Employability Week, I knew this was the course for me.

How did you get to where you are now?

My experience in the undergraduate research labs allowed me to develop several research skills. I particularly enjoyed working independently during my dissertation to complete assays and analysing data.

Your favourite thing about your current course?

I have enjoyed getting back into the lab again and learning a number of new techniques and assays. Now, I feel much more equipped to pursue a role in research.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my graduate journey was deciding whether to pursue a master’s degree or a graduate job. I was lucky to receive the support and advice I did during the School of Biosciences’ Employability Week, which helped me to decide which route to take.

Could you share one tip you wish you knew before you started

Start researching opportunities early on in your degree so that you can gain the relevant experience before graduating. Apply for positions as early into third year as possible to avoid juggling too much during finals.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
