Catherine Berridge graduated with a MOSci Ocean Sciences integrated Master's degree in 2024 and is now a PhD researcher at the University of York.
How did you hear about your course?
After having the freedom to explore my academic interests, delving deeper into data analysis and expanding on research initiated during my master's and undergraduate projects, it became clear that continuing in research was the natural next step after graduation. My supervisors played a pivotal role in guiding me through the various pathways available, complemented by my own independent research online. Connections and friends I made during work experience who had pursued PhD's also helped give me valuable insight into this path.
How did you get to where you are now?
The supervisors for my research projects on my course provided a tremendous level of support and guidance for my work and beyond. The support from family and friends allowed me to maintain my drive to get to this point.
Motivations: Having a goal which I aim to achieve, for instance, having an institution you’d like to work for in the future and taking every available opportunity which will increase the chances of this is crucial. Working within atmospheric/ oceanic sciences research is extremely meaningful, fulfilling and has a real purpose in benefitting the world.
Summer interns: Turtle conservation through Florida State University in Florida (exploring the impact of plastic pollution, increasing ocean temperatures and predators on breeding and nesting) and the DY167 expedition on Nitrogen Fixation in the Arctic Ocean (36 days onboard working).
Connections, reliability and kindness are key to obtaining and succeeding at work experience.
Your favourite thing about your current course?
Earlier this year, I spent time at the Met Office Head Office, working with my supervisors, I presented a poster at a conference. I was able to meet and connect with many inspiring and experienced people working or associated with the Met Office. Working with others gives valuable insight into my work and ideas worth exploring.
