Progressing: Robbie
Posted on: 6 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Robbie Oates is a Class of 2024 LLB Law graduate. He’s now working as a Paralegal with HM3 Legal whilst studying for his LPC at Liverpool John Moores University.
How did you hear about your role?
I came across HM3 Legal whilst researching firms that were offering training contracts, whilst also studying full-time for my LPC. Whilst looking at their website, I saw they were offering a part-time paralegal position in the Family and Relationships team. My passion for family law stems from when I volunteered in the University of Liverpool's Law Clinic – we offered free advice to clients and attended court with them if this was necessary. This enabled me to discover quite early on in my legal journey which area of law I wanted to train in.
How did you get to where you are now?
Toward the end of my LLB, I decided to pursue the LPC. I applied to John Moores and received an offer. I started my LPC in September 2024 and worked part-time in a Credit Hire team in a firm in Liverpool. Whilst studying, I came across my current role and I decided to apply, as I was keen to qualify into Family Law. I was invited to interview for the role and – after a successful interview – received an offer. I was lucky enough to spend some time off over Christmas, and started my new role in January 2025.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
My favourite part of my current role is most definitely the people I work with – my team made me feel incredibly welcome from day one, and I am lucky to learn from people who are amazing at what they do. In terms of the LPC, it was interesting to branch out to various areas and learn how things work in other practice areas.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The LPC has most definitely been the most challenging part of my journey so far. It was intense and required a lot of attention and detail throughout. The exams were tough, especially as I had not sat an in-person exam since my A-levels because of COVID.
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
There's no rush. When you come to the end of your undergraduate (or postgraduate) there is an intense pressure to find a job straight away or to find your path, but it is so important to take time whilst finding a job or deciding your next steps as everyone's journey is different.
