Progressing: Matthew

Posted on: 2 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

After graduating with our Computer Science with a Year in Industry Class of 2024 cohort Matthew Frank has gone on to work as a Software Engineer for the Gamma Group.

How did you hear about your role?

For my current position, I found the job advertisement through LinkedIn, I decided to apply for it because my previous position wasn't the right fit for me anymore, and this new role was a promotion.

How did you get to where you are now?

My time studying Computer Science allowed me to find my passion within the field, which was software engineering. I then got to experience what it was like to work as a software engineer during my year in industry at The Very Group where I got to learn from people with decades in the field.

In the summer before my final year of my degree I completed a university internship at Jamescape, which was offered to me by James Barber who was impressed with my experience and knowledge level. Completing the internship led to a part time role as a software engineer whilst studying and ultimately resulted in a graduate position. All of this extensive experience throughout my degree and in a graduate role led to me being in a great position to move up to a mid-level software engineer rapidly after graduating.

Your favourite experience on your course?

My favourite experience is probably the final assignment for the first-year module COMP105 as it was the first time I had ever gotten to combine theoretical computer science concepts in actual code – the implementation was a depth-first search algorithm to solve a series of mazes. I felt very accomplished afterwards and from that point absolutely knew I was on the right track.

The most challenging part of your journey?

The most challenging part was probably my first time studying at university, which was Electrical Engineering at the University of York. I realised that electronics and physics were something I really disliked and ended up with my mental health being quite low at the time, so it was challenging to get through the first semester.

Switching to Computer Science at Liverpool is probably one of the best decisions of my entire life.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Take advantage of the university experience. What I mean by that is all of the connections, potential internships, year in industry courses etc. And get as much out of everything as you can, you cannot buy the confidence that experiences like that will give you.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
