I Got Hired: Poppy
Posted on: 20 November 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024
Poppy is a Class of 2024 LLB Law with Honours graduate and Future Trainee Solicitor Markel Law.
How did you hear about your role?
I began heavily utilising LinkedIn as both a networking and recruitment tool in my second year. I researched many law firms and recruitment agencies during this time. I found a recruiter who was posting roles which aligned with my personal interests in terms of location and practice areas for a law firm.
How did you get where you are now?
I utilised the many opportunities available at university alongside my studies such as the professional legal mentor scheme; A legal study trip The Hague and becoming a committee member of The Legal Society. These experiences built up my CV and my confidence, whilst also facilitating connections with my peers which have lasted after leaving university.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
I begin my training contract in September 2025. However, I have spent this year working in an office and working as a barista. These experiences have helped me gain skills which I can utilise going forward in my trainee role in September. Further to this, this year has allowed me to build foundations in a new city whilst also acclimatising to working life after university.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The transition from university life to working life can be quite difficult to adjust to. Therefore, make sure that you plan regular meet ups with your university friends as you are all in a similar situation and can relate to each other!
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
My golden tip is to really focus your applications to companies which align with your personal interests rather than taking a scattergun approach by applying to everything - Less is more! Each application is then tailored to that exact company which the recruiter will be able to see from your application. Don't just apply to every grad scheme that comes up!
