I Got Hired: Lily

Posted on: 27 November 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

BSc Mathematics and Economics graduate Lily now works as a Business Support Specialist at Jules Baer.

How did you hear about your role?

I found my role as a Business Support Specialist through a recruiter who introduced me to the exciting opportunity. From the outset, it was clear that the company had a strong reputation for excellence and a clear commitment to employee development, which was really important for me in the early stages of my career.

How did you get where you are now?

Getting to where I am now has been heavily shaped by the guidance I’ve received from others. Throughout university, and even after graduation, I was fortunate to have family and friends who offered honest advice, encouragement, and perspective in the right moments. Ask around for help with preparing for interviews and identifying the kind of work environment you want to be in.

Recruiters also played a big role, not only in connecting me to roles but in guiding me through the process and helping me understand what opportunities were really out there. Self motivation is essential, but so too is being open to advice and reaching out to others. Sometimes, all it takes is introducing yourself to the right person, someone who can help point you towards the right role.

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

One of my favourite parts of graduating and starting my new role has been realising that being good at your job is just one part of the equation – what really sets you apart is how you communicate and carry yourself professionally. I have been lucky to start the process of completing my professional finance qualifications, whilst also being offered ways to better my interpersonal skills. Finding a company that encourages development beyond just technical knowledge is important.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Applying to jobs can be tedious, especially when it’s not just a quick LinkedIn easy-apply, and it can feel a little disheartening when you don’t hear back from opportunities. However, one of the most valuable strategies I found was taking the initiative to reach out directly to those involved in the hiring process and making personal connections. Building relationships and showing genuine interest often made a real difference. Each conversation, interview, and experience teaches you something new, moving you closer to the right opportunity.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Pay attention when things go well, but pay even more attention when they don’t – that’s when you learn the most. Don’t be afraid to share ideas – you may not have been somewhere long but if you feel you can add to a discussion speak up…even if your idea isn’t used it shows initiative.
