I Got Hired: Scarlett
Posted on: 12 November 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024
Scarlett is now a Graduate Solicitor Apprentice (Trainee Solicitor) at Hill Dickenson after completing here LLB Law with a Year Abroad in 2024.
How did you hear about your role?
I attended the university careers fair, where I met with loads of great firms! They provided lots of information on how to apply and the events they were hosting prior to the applications process. I made sure to attend these events so I could better understand the firms and if they would be a good fit. Hill Dickinson was really approachable and everyone I met was really kind and encouraging so I knew it was a place I wanted to work.
How did you get to where you are now?
Use any work experience or opportunities you have done to your advantage. You do not need to have had legal work experience to secure a job in law. I had a part-time job in sales throughout university, which allowed me to demonstrate a range of skills I had developed such as organisation and problem-solving. I also volunteered at my local rugby club for many years as a coach and referee and this allowed me to demonstrate skills in leadership and communication. Don't down play your experiences or opportunities as they are often the things that make you stand out from other applicants. I actually was not successful the first time I applied for a training contract at HD. I was unsuccessful in the final stage but they provided me with full comprehensive feedback and encouraged me to apply again the following year, which I did. I took on board the feedback and put in the work to make better changes, I also studied the Law Clinic Module in my final year which really helped to develop my legal skills and awareness. My second application was much stronger and I was successful in securing the job! Coming back the second time I felt more confident and assured that this was where I wanted to work, which just proves if you really want something do not be disheartened if you don't get it on the first go, get back up and try again!
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
I am still pretty fresh out of university but it has been great meeting up with the other Trainees in my cohort and making new friends. I did so many great things during my studies, I spent a year abroad in Italy and lived with my best friends. I am looking ahead to the next exciting chapter albeit a slightly more serious one in comparison to my time studying!
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
Without question, the most challenging part of my graduate journey has been preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Exams (SQE). The exams have truly tested every aspect of my legal knowledge, analytical thinking, and practical understanding of the law. From re-visiting black-letter law to applying it in practical contexts, the study process has been demanding, intense, and at times overwhelming. Despite these challenges, I remain determined and optimistic. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and hopeful that I will be successful in passing!
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
You can do hard things! Post-grad life is hard, you might not know what comes next or how to get there but before this you have done hard things and succeeded! So remember even though it is hard you can do hard things and be great at them!
