I Got Hired: Ruby

Posted on: 26 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

After graduating with a Communication and Politics degree, Ruby is now working as a Digital Marketing Assistant for Shiseido.

How did you hear about your role?

I found the role advertised on LinkedIn. I was pretty open minded when it came to the position title – however, I knew I wanted to work within the beauty industry, so I made sure to filter my search down to companies within it.

How did you get to where you are now?

During my summers off from university, I worked in hospitality at a golf club and then when I was in my second year, I did an internship at a media agency in Liverpool. I would go in once a week as I was still studying, but it helped me to understand more about marketing and what parts I did or didn't like.

I knew leaving Liverpool at the end of my final year that I would be applying for entry level roles as my experience was limited so, I spent a lot of time highlighting my enthusiasm for the industry and willingness to learn. Reaching out to people who work in similar fields was very a beneficial aid as it consolidated my understanding of what the day to day would look like in a marketing role and whether that was something I felt I could succeed in.

Additionally, acknowledging that everybody runs their own race was super important for me. It is very easy to find yourself comparing your achievements to others and feeling as if you are behind in comparison to your peers. I tried to not put too much pressure on myself to get a role, I was fully aware that it was likely I would spend time in roles that weren't necessarily my end goal, but an integral part of my learning. Speaking from experience, I am aware many people leave university with the expectation that they will walk into their 'dream job' however, it is a marathon not a sprint and the skills you collect on the way, whether that be from rejection or taking up a job you aren't as keen on, are crucial for future success.

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

I recently attended the NARS Pop Up event in Covent Garden as part of our Player's Choice campaign. As employees of the company, we got to go to the event before the public and it was really cool getting to see the vision that we had been discussing come to life. Additionally, it was great to see the positive feedback left by fans of the brand on social media. It really makes the harder days worthwhile!

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Knowing what you want to do! It often feels like there are so many possibilities that you are unable to fine tune the direction you want to take. There were definitely times when it felt like my brain was going to explode as there were so many different career paths I wanted to take. I think it is important to get stuck in and try things. Even if they don't work out, it doesn't mean the door is closed to the other opportunities you considered.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Any experience is good experience so say yes to every opportunity you can! Being at the beginning of your career is the best excuse to be keen! You never know what you might learn or who you might meet doing things that you may not have usually said yes to.
