I Got Hired: Obimobi
Posted on: 12 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Obimobi is a Class of 2024 Biological and Medical Sciences graduate now working as an Autoclave Technician in the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology at the University of Liverpool.
How did you hear about your role?
I heard about the role from the amazing Ms Jen Foden-James that works with the Careers & Employability team. She posted the opportunity on LinkedIn to her network and considering my experience working at the University of Liverpool to support their Health & Life Sciences faculty, I saw myself as a good fit for the role!
How did you get to where you are now?
Oh where do I start!
At the University of Liverpool, I was lucky enough to work with Dr. Carl Larsen and Miss Amal Abdulkadir to push several initiatives within the faculty of health and life sciences. All of these initiatives were centred around making science more accessible to students and young people in general.
From working on these initiatives, I got the opportunity to assist and lead my own lab practical’s covering cardiovascular tests as well as wet lab techniques such as gel electrophoresis. As someone who was in the middle of his undergraduate degree, this challenged me to ensure that I was competent to follow experiment standard operating procedures (SOPs) to the letter and be in a position to confidently assist over 50 students whilst adhering to lab safety guidelines.
I also got the opportunity to further familiarise myself with the lab environment by getting biotechnology lab skills training from Biograd Education at their site in Wavertree Technology Park. This gave me more hands on experience carrying out experiments such as ELISA, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, Western Blotting and even carry out antibiotic resistance tests! It was an immersive two week course that really made me confident in my skills as a scientist and provided me professional practical training.
To pick up other transferable skills, I have taken on a number of challenges to show all the talents that I bring to the table. At the University of Liverpool, I won the Life Science Enterprise Award twice, with a team of peers won the Reach EQ+ award, won the greatest contribution to EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) EQ+ award and even took my talents globally to win with a fantastic team the Berlin Sustainability Challenge in 2024!
Another challenge I took on was in the aspect of digital communications which led me to work with the prestigious Princess Diana Award to be a front-end web developer for their center for social action (cfsa) in 2024 and I also kickstarted my own freelance media agency giving myself the opportunity to lead marketing campaigns to raise over a thousand pounds in funding for the rennovation of the African Carribean Centre.
All of these experiences allowed me to find my voice and helped me build a physical track-record that I could show employers further showcasing my suitability for any role I was applying for.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
I would say trying to find a path where I could leverage what I was good at. I knew I loved the life sciences and making knowledge within this field more acessible. However, I struggled to find a place where I could use my talents and feel fulfilled doing so.
Along the way, I got to find a way to do so for my University and even outside of academia using my talents in digital communications to support communities and local businesses within the city of Liverpool.
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
Be intentional with your time.
You can't say yes to every opportunity, I know. However, while does not mean you should always say no.
There are several opportunities hidden in university emails, flyers and even posters that you see around campus. You would be surprised how many things are going on in the city as well like free networking events or group projects.
I would say take advantage of everything you can. You never know what internship/volunteering gig/networking event can lead to something positive down the line.
Having to work a job, keep relationships, think about your future and still excel at your studies is hard, I know. That is why I say be intentional with your time so you can spend it well without burning yourself out and still proudly know you have done everything you can.
It may take time, but it will work out!
