I Got Hired: Molly
Posted on: 24 November 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024
Class of 2024 BA English Literature graduate Molly now works at Bloomsbury Publishing as an Editorial Assistant.
How did you hear about your role?
I saw it advertised on the Independent Publishers Guild, under the Jobs page.
How did you get where you are now?
During my third year of university, I took a module (SOTA300) that allows students to undergo a work placement to gather experience. I was a Poetry Publishing Assistant at Liverpool University Press where I learnt about the publishing industry and worked with the Editorial Director to help publish a collection of poetry by a poet. With the advice from publishing professionals at LUP and the skills I had gained from my placement, I felt confident I wanted to explore publishing further as a career.
During my time at university, I also worked at the Liverpool Literary Festival and volunteered at a writing charity in Liverpool called The Windows Project. Additionally, I was a writer for the Liverpool Guild Student Media and the Liverpool Tab.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
My favourite experience has been working closely with our authors. In editorial, author care is one of our biggest priorities so being able to meet authors at conferences and go for lunches has been one of my favourite parts of my job as I enjoy building that strong relationship (I also love a free lunch!). I also recently interviewed an author for one of our online platforms, which was really fun!
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
I think the most challenging part of my graduate journey has been the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that creeps into the back of my mind. Beginning an entry level role is challenging and it’s easy to put a lot of pressure on yourself to know everything and get it right, so when you don’t, it feels like a set back and you begin to question whether you’re good enough to be there and compare yourself to others. However, it’s important to remember that it’s entry level for a reason. You’re there to learn and in order to learn, you must make mistakes.
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
Don’t compare your journey to others. After graduation, your friends will go in completely different directions. Even if they seem to be going in the same direction, they are still on a different path. There are no right and wrongs, you do what’s right for you. It’s easy to question whether you have made the right choice, whether that’s going travelling, moving away for a new job or going back home. There are so many routes you can take and it’s okay to keep changing the direction you’re going. So, don’t get hung up on whether you’re doing the ‘right’ thing and have fun exploring different options.
