I Got Hired: Marco

Posted on: 4 September 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

LLB (Hons) Law graduate Marco Melia is now pursuing his legal career as a Trainee Solicitor at CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP.

How did you hear about your role?

I attended the University of Liverpool Careers Fair in November 2023 where I met representatives of the firm for the first time. Immediately, I clicked with the people and was encouraged to apply for their Training Contract.

How did you get to where you are now?

The recruitment process for CMS was extremely challenging. It consisted of four stages (three virtual, one in-person assessment centre). I also attended CMS led events such as open evenings and online webinars to hone my application and demonstrate to the firm the specific office, why I wanted to work there. I received my offer over the phone during a 'Law of Business Enterprise' lecture. This is a fascinating subject, but I didn't return to finish the lecture after that phone call!

I didn't have much work experience before joining CMS. However, I had done some work over the summer and winter breaks at the regional high-street firm Watson Ramsbottom in the Conveyancing Department. This is where I learnt more about property law and decided that commercial property is the area of law which I wanted to specialise in.

I feel that the work experience at Watson Ramsbottom was extremely useful for my interpersonal skills and taught me how to act in an office and arguably the most important, how to deal with conflict and criticism.

My family were extremely supportive throughout the application windows in my second and third year. I was rejected several times by different law firms but didn't let this deter me from a career in law. My colleagues at CMS were also very supportive and offered advice when I attended CMS events and webinars.

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

I have a few favourite experiences so far. Mainly, though, I would say my favourite experience is meeting my colleagues in other offices and bonding over the challenge of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE)!

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging aspect of my graduate journey has been completing parts 1 and 2 of the SQE. This was, without doubt, the single most challenging 12 months of my academic and professional life. The SQE requires immense dedication and a frightening number of late nights and exams. However, it's all worth it on SQE results day.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Balance. Make the most of what little social time you have between graduating and starting full-time employment.

I haven't mentioned this so far, but I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease five years ago. Despite the physical and mental difficulties of this diagnosis, I have not let this limit me in any way, whatsoever. So, my advice to anyone struggling with something similar is don’t let a disability define you; rather, you should define it!

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
