Kathryn is a BSc Occupational Therapy graduate who has gone on to work at Sefton Council as an Occupational Therapist.

How did you hear about your role?

was itching for a career change after 17 years in retail. When Covid swept the nation, I found myself furloughed with time on my hands and thought ‘it’s now or never’.

How did you get where you are now?

I had to complete an access course to gain entry into university. Initially I was rejected on the grounds of my UCAS application, but I wasn’t taking no for an answer! I wrote to admissions and the course leader asking to be reconsidered if I re-wrote my application. I was blessed with a second chance and three years later I graduated with a first. I couldn’t be prouder of myself or more thankful to the people that made that happen.

Our course was absolutely brilliant for the variety of placement opportunities. I loved every one of my placements! In the third year we were also given excellent advice and prep work for mock interviews which I felt set us up so well when the time came. I had two interviews and was immediately offered both posts. It was agony deciding, but a nice problem to have!

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

Even as part of my placements, I’ll never forget overhearing a staff member say “you can always tell the Liverpool students!”. Meaning they were impressed with how prepared we came to placement. I couldn’t name one favourite experience from my first year qualified. There is nothing more heartwarming than the gratitude people express for the help we provide. When a service user tells you you’ve changed their life for the better, what could possibly be better than that!?

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The transition from student to qualified has been a difficult journey. I won’t lie, I still suffer with imposter syndrome almost a year on. It’s all about ensuring you speak up when you need support, asking for regular supervision and taking constructive criticism like a champ!

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Never give up. Seriously. Don’t be disheartened by grades, late penalties or workload. You’re all in it together and I promise it’s worth it. What you are capable of is based on your potential, not your past.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
