I Got Hired: Kacper

Posted on: 14 November 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Kacper is a MESci Geology (Hons) graduate from 2024 who now works at Jacobs as a Level 7 (MSc) Apprentice Engineering Geologist.

How did you hear about your role?

I didn't actually know about my role at first as it was offered to me after I had applied for another role! I spent my final year of my integrated masters degree researching and applying for various geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering roles in major engineering consultancies across the UK and the world.  Engineering has always been a great passion for me whilst growing up and I wanted to find a role that allowed me to work on major projects that would make a positive change on the world, solving complex problems that would make the world a better place.

How did you get to where you are now?

I had initially applied for a graduate geotechnical engineer role at Jacobs and following a series of online forms and tests, I was invited to an interview.  Initially scheduled to last half an hour, the interview lasted over 2 hours where we talked extensively about my fieldwork and research experience, with additional people being brought in to discuss further development, working on major projects and opportunities abroad at Jacobs.  Whilst I didn't have a formal engineering degree, the interviewers were incredibly impressed by the experiences and skills that I picked up at the University of Liverpool and I was offered the opportunity to start working as an engineering geologist through a degree apprenticeship where I'd be able to gain professional experience alongside studying the theory behind geotechnical engineering and gaining an additional masters in geotechnical engineering.  Having worked at Jacobs for a year now, I've gained loads of experience across a variety of major infrastructure projects covering the nuclear, highways, water and rail sectors and I have already started gathering relevant CPD evidence to use as part of the chartership process to become a Chartered Geologist (CGeol).

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

My favourite experience as part of my current role was being able to work on major projects from the outset, with my first project placement being in the nuclear sector on a scheme that will run for the entirety of my career as an engineering geologist.  It is an amazing feeling when something you've worked on will have such an immense positive and lasting impact on the world and it left me with an immense feeling of pride in my work and the effort that I've given to reach this point.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I'd say the most challenging part of my journey has been with trying to balance work alongside pursuing a degree.  Workloads can balloon quite quickly during the exam and assignment season but I've been supported by Jacobs throughout this process and I believe that the experiences I gained through my first masters at the University of Liverpool has given me great experience for managing my workload, retaining a work-life balance and still giving my continuing education my best effort during my second masters at the University of Leeds.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

You miss all the shots that you don't take. My graduate journey is living proof of that.  Whilst I didn't have an engineering degree, the knowledge, skills and experiences I gained through my integrated masters in geology at the University of Liverpool made me stand out as a candidate and I was thankfully given this amazing opportunity by Jacobs to develop my career alongside furthering my education.  Apply for that role, take that call, go to that networking event, go travelling, embark on new experiences, push yourself out of your comfort zone, say yes to that opportunity as you never know where it may take you - and most of all, enjoy the journey and enjoy the process of going through life, it's really quite a wonderful thing!

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
