I Got Hired: Heidi

Posted on: 29 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Heidi is a Class of 2024 LLB Law with a Year Abroad graduate. After graduation she worked for Soho House & Co and has recently joined Latham & Watkins LLP as a Trainee Solicitor.

How did you hear about your role?

In my final year, I was uncertain about pursuing law beyond undergraduate studies and decided to gain commercial experience to better understand how large corporations like Soho House & Co function. Drawing on my retail background at store level, I set up LinkedIn alerts for positions at large retail companies' head offices, which eventually led to securing my role at Soho Home, within Soho House. In this position, I have successfully applied key skills developed through my undergraduate studies and employment history, including strategic thinking, organisation, and time management.

How did you get to where you are now?

My broad part-time work experience across various companies and industries significantly strengthened my post-graduate job applications. Each role contributed to developing both practical employability skills and also valuable soft skills, whilst instilling me with a strong work ethic. When considering my career direction, I lent on the advice and guidance of friends, family, mentors. Shortly after joining Soho House, I had the opportunity to work closely with the Legal team, who have since become invaluable mentors. My experiences with teams across the business encouraged me to reconsider pursuing law and qualify as a solicitor. These combined experiences helped frame my Training Contract application process, and after a challenging application cycle, and I'm delighted to have now accepted a Training Contract with Latham & Watkins.

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

In my role at Soho House & Co I thoroughly enjoyed gaining insight into how a large business operates, particularly working within the luxury retailer division, Soho Home. I've collaborated effectively across departments to achieve commercial objectives while maintaining regular engagement with third-party contractors. As someone who thrives in social environments, I've particularly valued enjoyed working across teams and building relationships within the business. This commercial exposure and experience has shaped my decision to pursue a career at an large international corporate law firm, where I can apply the knowledge I've gained to my role as a trainee solicitor.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The biggest challenge was not knowing what I wanted to do and feeling like I was at a crossroads. Though, it's completely normal not to know what you want to do! I was absolutely certain I didn't want to become a lawyer (my friends and family can definitely vouch for that!), but taking time away from studying and getting some real commercial experience at a fast-growing company really helped me make a proper, informed decision about qualifying as a solicitor. I'm so glad I didn't rush into it - it gave me time to really think about what I wanted my career to be.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Don't be afraid to reach out to people and ask questions! My #1 golden nugget of advice is to put yourself out there - ask people for a quick phone call, Zoom chat, or coffee. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how many people are happy to share their career stories and pass on advice and what they've learned. If you don't ask, you'll never know!
