I Got Hired: Emily
Posted on: 9 November 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024
BA English and Sociology graduate Emily now works at Liverpool Hope University as a Global Student and Partnership Officer.
How did you hear about your role?
I first heard about my current role by searching on Liverpool Hope University website and LinkedIn.
During my time at University, I completed a semester abroad in The University of South Carolina at 19. Studying abroad changed my perspective on a lot of things and granted myself many opportunities. When I returned for my final year, I worked at The University of Liverpool with the Global team as an ambassador to encourage others to take the leap. When I originally started my degree, I wanted to teach English, however my experience abroad opened ideas to jobs I didn’t even know existed. When I graduated, I was searching for opportunities to work within international education, and I came across my role now!
A full circle moment really.
How did you get to where you are now?
Experience, confidence and being yourself! Upon my return to Liverpool after my semester abroad, I looked for any opportunity to work within the global team. From working as an ambassador on open days, assisting students with their applications, to working on the 6-week international summer school program at UOL. All these different experiences helped me to learn more about this field of work but also learn both sides of the table (the student and the professional) Support is key! The international summer school manager at Liverpool, Joan, was a great mentor to talk to! Upon my application to my current role, I decided to reach out to her to ask for advice and what her top tips would be for me to excel. My advice would always be to reach out to people, ask questions, get involved and just enjoy what you do!
Passion is also a main selling point to employers. I remember the day I got the call to say I was successful in my currently role and I was told, I was the youngest applicant, but I had the most drive and experience. Age really doesn’t matter, if you go for it, you can do it!;
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
After you graduate it can be a daunting time that not a lot of people talk about. When I graduated, a lot of people were either on a gap year, starting their master's or in graduate scheme jobs. But for myself I was still working at my part time job that I had at University as I was unsure what my next steps where. That is normal! The biggest misconception is that you must have it all figured out the same time as everyone else. I took time for myself and I was lucky enough to go back to the states to visit my friends from my study abroad two years prior. It was this trip that made me realise what it is I am most happy doing!
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
Don’t compare yourself to everyone else’s life once you graduate. Trust yourself and what it is that you need. We are all figuring it out at the same time, if it takes you 3 years to find your passion then that’s okay! Or if you don’t want to work in a job associated with your degree that’s also okay, or whether you want to travel the world… Be proud of yourself for your achievements, success is measured personally!
